Bringing your furry friend home after surgery is a huge relief, but also marks the beginning of a crucial recovery period. Proper post-operative care is essential for ensuring your pet heals comfortably and without complications. At Animal Care Hospital of Walnut Creek, we provide detailed discharge instructions; however, understanding the general principles of post-surgical care can make this process smoother for you and your beloved companion.

Creating a Calm and Comfortable Environment

The first few days after surgery are critical for rest and healing. Designate a quiet, comfortable space for your pet to recover undisturbed. This could be their usual bed or a cozy corner in a low-traffic area. Ensure the space is clean and has easy access to fresh water and their designated recovery food. Keep other pets and active children away to prevent accidental bumps or disturbances that could disrupt healing or cause pain.

Pain Management: Following Veterinary Instructions

Your veterinarian will likely prescribe pain medication to keep your pet comfortable during the initial recovery phase. It is vital to administer these medications exactly as directed, at the prescribed dosage and frequency. Never give your pet over-the-counter human pain relievers, as these can be toxic to animals. If you have any concerns about your pet’s pain level or are having difficulty administering medication, please don’t hesitate to contact us for guidance. Observing your pet for signs of pain, such as restlessness, excessive licking of the surgical site, or changes in appetite, is also essential.

Monitoring the Surgical Site

Regularly inspect your pet’s incision site for signs of infection or complications. Look for excessive redness, swelling, discharge (especially if it’s yellow or green), or a foul odor. A small amount of bruising is typical in the initial days. Preventing your pet from licking or chewing at the incision is crucial, as this can introduce bacteria and delay healing. Your veterinarian may recommend an Elizabethan collar, also known as a “cone of shame,” to prevent this behavior from occurring. Ensure the collar fits properly and doesn’t interfere with your pet’s ability to eat or drink.

Restricting Activity: Patience is Key

While it’s natural for your pet to want to return to their usual activities, restricting movement is crucial for proper healing. Avoid strenuous exercise, such as running, jumping, and rough play, for the duration your veterinarian recommends, typically 10 to 14 days. Short, controlled leash walks are usually permitted for bathroom breaks, but keep them brief and on level ground. This restricted activity allows the internal and external tissues to heal without being stressed or torn.

Feeding and Hydration: Gentle Nourishment

Your veterinarian will provide specific instructions regarding your pet’s diet post-surgery. They often recommend a bland, easily digestible diet for one to two days to prevent digestive upset. Ensure fresh water is always available. Monitor your pet’s appetite and water intake closely. If your pet refuses to eat or drink for more than 24 hours or experiences vomiting or diarrhea, contact us immediately.

Completing the healing journey with follow-up care

Bringing your pet home after surgery is a big step! Help them recover by providing a calm environment, administering prescribed pain medication as directed, monitoring the surgical site, limiting physical activity, and following the feeding instructions. Be patient, as each pet heals at their own pace.

Don’t forget to attend all follow-up appointments so we can check their healing, remove stitches if needed, and ensure they’re on the right track. Feel free to ask any questions during these visits.
